Horizontal bar chart

A horizontal bar chart maker for ranks and long names

A horizontal bar chart is a bar chart turned on its side. The length still encodes the value. The difference is the room for the name. Topics, countries, product titles, and survey answers fit beside a bar more cleanly than they fit under one. This page builds that chart, with one or more series, a sort, axis titles, and a PDF, PNG, or JPEG export.

How to lay out the rank

Put the category name in the label and the amount in the value. If you are showing a ranking, turn on sort by value so the longest bar is at the top. If you are showing a fixed list, such as departments in an org order, leave the sort off and arrange the rows yourself. Add a row for a new item and remove a row that no longer belongs. An empty label with a zero value still takes space, so delete it.

The value axis runs along the bottom. Title it with the unit: tickets, votes, hours, dollars. Title the category axis only if the list needs a name the labels do not already give. A minimum above zero has the same problem it has on a vertical bar: it exaggerates gaps. Leave the minimum blank unless you are matching another chart’s scale on purpose, and then say so in the subtitle.

One series is the usual ranking. A second series compares two measures for the same names, such as this month and last month. Name both series. The legend uses those names. Value labels help when the ranking is close and the reader should not have to guess the length. They hurt when the bars are short and the numbers overlap the axis. Try both before you export.

Color is for the series. A single ranking does not need a rainbow. If you highlight one bar, you cannot do that per row on this page; keep the story in the order and the labels instead of painting a winner by hand. The grid, if you leave it on, gives a faint ruler. Turn it off for a poster that should look quiet.

Export PNG when the names must stay sharp on a slide. Export PDF when the chart is a figure in a document. Export JPEG only when a system rejects the other two. If the names are short and you want time along the bottom, use the vertical bar chart. If you need the parts inside each total, use the stacked bar chart. The tool grid under this page opens both, and it opens the table maker when the reader needs the numbers as a list rather than as lengths.

The table maker is still here. These charts are for the picture of the same numbers: parts, trends, spread, and rank. Open any chart, change the sample, and download PDF, PNG, or JPEG.
